Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, located in Cumbria’s Lake District National Park. It is also the name of a small, charming town nestled between Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside, both popular towns on Lake Windermere in the Lake District. To say this is an area of outstanding beauty is not an exaggeration.

Local amenities

In the town centre, there is a mix of independent and high street shops. There are also supermarkets and most famously, the founding flagship store of Lakeland, the home and kitchenware chain. Additionally, Windermere is home to several bistros, wine bars and pubs giving residents a wide range of options to unwind and relax.

Windermere is a prime location for outdoor activities, primarily water sports such as paddle boarding and water skiing. Come along to Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre, for a great day out whatever the weather! It’s located on the shores of Windermere.

Windermere is arguably one of most popular locations in the whole of the Lake District National Park. There is a large variety of attractions, recreational activities and sights to see on and around Lake Windermere. The Great North Swim is the UK’s most popular open water swims and happens in Windermere every summer. For cyclists, the Fred Whitton Challenge is also held in the Lake District and is regarded as one of the toughest cycling events in the UK.

Nearby in Bowness-on-Windermere there is a cinema and with its variety of wine bars, restaurants and cafes, the town also has a busy nightlife. The bustling area is popular with all ages.

Windermere is highly accessible by train, bus and car. For drivers, the M6 motorway connects you to other major cities in England and for rail travel, Oxenholme, Lake District station has a direct line to London Euston is only four stops away from Windermere’s station. The town has many local buses servicing nearby towns such as the frequent 555 bus to Kendal which offers a hop on hop off service between Lancaster and Keswick via the most breathtaking route and stopping at all the major villages and towns.
